[ ABOUT ]

This project aims to address elder loneliness through intergenerational engagement. By building friendships between younger and older people, we hope to develop a supportive service and system.
The card set we developed acts as a toolkit to help people better communicate about the loneliness experienced by older adults. It also works as a bridge between the community, the elderly, and the younger adults. Through this tool, we aim to create a circular system of interaction and co-created value that supports the aged group to reduce loneliness.

ELDER’S
LONLIENESS

It is evidence that there is are lack of care and support for people’s loneliness issue, especially elders, who were not provided enough care as they should have.
To address this loneliness issue and the lack of a system, I identify the missing part in the current society, involving the community to explore the method to reduce the elderly’s loneliness issue.

RESEARCH

Target  Issue

Elder’s Loneliness

Findings
As the NHS primarily focuses on physical healthcare and has limited capacity to address elderly loneliness, the constellation map highlights that community charities offer stronger support for elders’ mental and emotional well-being. This suggests that collaborating with community organizations has greater potential to effectively reduce loneliness among older adults.

ISSUE&PROBLEMS

PAIN POINTS

  • The elderly usually have difficulty meeting new people to build a long-term friendship.
  • Mobility issues also make it hard for them to go outside and access the community, which causes them to stay indoors and leads to social isolation.
  • Current public health( NHS) resources have limited support for loneliness, a lack of elder mental care services

DESIGN CONCEPT

Combine the service design and Intergeneration concept, using the empathy card set as the empathy toolkit.  This project aimed to create a co-created system, including people in the community, to support the aged group in reducing loneliness.

Target group

The aged group over 65

Goal
This project uses a toolkit as the core design approach to encourage participation and engagement. The toolkit acts as a bridge between individuals and the community, connecting elders and younger adults through shared physical artifacts that invite play, reaction, and meaningful interaction.

SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

INTERGENERATIONAL APPROACH

By working as a network, the community, elders, and younger people can create value together, turning a one-way service into a system of mutual benefit. Everyone can both contribute and gain support. As shown in the diagram, the community links different stakeholders, making collaboration with community organisations essential.

IDEAL CONSTELLATION MAP

Toolkit engaged

This version of the final ideal value constellation map includes the toolkit as a stakeholder. This map demonstrates that this toolkit can co-create greater value when we put it in the system to work with other stakeholders
